It’s a nice overlay that shows completed tasks and highlights important objects if you’re near them. The journal feature was helpful for chasing those down and to find new objectives when we got a little lost. There were several tasks where I had to coordinate with my team to press levers across the map within a time limit, or defend specific areas in smaller teams. Teamwork is vital in Nazi Zombies, not only for basic survival, but to complete the story quest that opens more areas, mysteries, and leads to a final boss. There are mild jumpscares and intense music that certainly makes for a creepy setting, but it’s nothing I couldn’t handle. As one of the most easily scared people in the IGN office, I was a little disappointed that Nazi Zombies only made me jump once but never really recoil in horror. Each character’s dialogue suits them well, though they were far more terrified of their setting than I was. Each of the four is excellently acted, with David Tennant’s character being my favorite, because, you know, he’s David Tennant (AKA the Tenth Doctor).

In the rather basic story, the four main characters in Nazi Zombies must retrieve art that was stolen by the Axis powers (and rescue one character’s brother), and end up having to fight a Nazi zombie army.

Overall, even though this version sees a lot of improvements, it still needs to figure out how to make online play between teams of strangers a better experience.

It’s a little more tense, but with even more upgrade systems (there are so, so many systems in WW2), it can be easier to survive Nazi Zombies’ grueling waves of undead.

Like previous versions, Nazi Zombies is a dense puzzle that’s a ton of fun to crack with friends while surviving hordes of zombies. This iteration of the beloved four-player co-op zombies mode pulls back the zaniness of Infinite Warfare’s Zombies in Spaceland theme park in favor of a much creepier setting and a story to go with it. I didn't see spawn-killing happen much in other modes. The matches I played felt like they never quite found a balance as I frequently loaded in near enemies and was instantly killed – no one wants that, except maybe the person that’s sitting in my spawn. The generally smaller maps mean that spawns and new Hardpoint spots are at odds with each other. Then there’s Hardpoint mode, a staple since Call of Duty: Black Ops II, which didn’t make a good transition into WW2. A maximum number of 12 players per game works, but additional players would make it truly live up to the name of War. I do want to see more maps made for War, and hopefully one of those expansions will include a map that increases the number of players on each team. Their maps are also more open, which grants greater flexibility in approaching or defending an objective. Thankfully the other operations are vastly more enjoyable – mostly because their objectives are cooler (like building a building a bridge in a dangerous area or escorting a tank to a point like Overwatch’s Escort mode). The map for this operation isn’t all that interesting either. It would have been nice for NPCs to last longer when teams are clearly struggling to make it out of the water. It’s one thing to be defeated by better opponents on a level playing field, but another altogether when they have the high ground as well. But when my team was clearly less skilled than our opponents or if we lacked a good sniper, we were constantly slayed in our spawn. When playing with a competent team, taking the beach was a challenge, but felt fair. The Axis team is well-equipped to stop that push with several mounted machine guns. NPCs charge with the Allied team for a short time, but they merely serve as a distraction for the beginning of the Allied push. As you’d expect, the Allied team tries to storm the beach and capture two bunkers while the Axis team must stop them. It’s a more underwhelming version of the mission, too.

Of D-Day in the campaign, it felt weird going back to this setting in multiplayer. It was weird going back to D-Day in multiplayer.
